Ductless mini-split cooling/heating systems have many potential applications in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. The most common applications are in cinderblock homes, multi-family housing, room additions where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible and older homes without air ducts.

A ductless mini-split system operates like a conventional air conditioner or heat pump. The difference is that, instead of a single central air conditioning and heating system that distributes heated and cooled air via ductwork, a ductless split system uses multiple small AC or heat pump units that serve individual rooms or zones via small internal air handlers that deliver conditioned air without ductwork (the term "mini" refers to the small indoor air handler units).

Like central systems, mini splits have two main components: an outdoor compressor/condenser, and an indoor air handling unit. A small diameter conduit houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, and a condensate drain that runs between the outdoor and indoor unit. That's what makes it ideal for areas where large ductwork can't be easily added.

The main advantage of mini ductless splits is their compact size and flexibility for heating and cooling individual rooms. Many models can have up to four indoor air handling units connected to one outdoor unit. Each individual zone has its own thermostat so that each space can be conditioned individually...saving energy and money.

Since mini splits have no ducts, they avoid the energy losses associated with ductwork of central forced air systems (which can be as high as 30%, especially if the ducts are in an unconditioned space such as an attic). For certain applications, a mini-split ductless system may be your best option, especially if you are retrofitting a non-duct space or home.
