How Electronic Air Cleaners Work

The air inside your home can be polluted with contaminations without you even realizing it. It is likely filled with irritants like pollen, dust, pet dander and hair, and dust mites. These pollutants can become more harmful if you suffer from allergies, own pets, or smoke. Your home should be a safe place where you can breathe freely, without worrying about what you’re taking into your lungs. An electronic air cleaner can help cleanse your air and ease your mind when taking deep breaths.

How Does It Work?

Electronic air cleaners use multiple mechanisms to clean your air, including physical filters, ionization, and ozone generation. Contaminated air is pushed through these three mechanisms, each eliminating a different kind of pollutant and maintaining your indoor air quality.

The air cleaning process works as follows:

  • First, the physical filter pushes air from the room through a filter to trap large particles, like hair and lint. Smaller particles, like dust and pollen, pass through this filter and enter the ionizing section.
  • During ionization, the particles become charged and begin to clump together. The plates within the filter attract and repel the clumps, using positive and negative charges to get the clumps to stick to the plates in the filter.
  • Finally, the air passes to the ozone generator, which creates unstable molecules with extra oxygen atoms. The oxygen molecules combine with contaminants and destroy microorganisms, like bacteria.

The air passes through the three mechanisms and becomes clean and fresh again, ready for you and your family to breath it in.

Do I Have to Clean My Air Filter?

If you own an electronic air cleaner, you will have to clean it around two times a year. While it may seem like another chore to take care of, the process couldn’t be simpler and can save you money.

Fortunately, most electronic air cleaners are designed to be easily taken apart and cleaned. You will likely need to hand wash the dirty plates with water and soap, however, other components can be easily cleaned in a washing machine or with a garden hose. Because the plates are the filters, you don’t have to worry about purchasing or replacing them with new filters, saving you money in the long run.
