Getting Rid of Unwanted Hot Spots in Your Home

Are all the rooms in your house seemingly different temperatures? Are you having a hard time sleeping because your bedroom won’t cool off or your favorite room to read in is freezing, despite the rest of the house being just cool enough? It can be very frustrating when you can’t get your house temperature to remain consistent. However, before you go ordering a whole new system, the reality is that your air conditioning unit probably isn’t broken. In fact, it’s much more likely that the rooms of your house aren’t able to heat or cool at the same time due to several unique factors. In many cases, you may be simply asking too much of one AC unit. If you’re tired of having hot and cold spots in your home and can’t seem to find a viable solution, zoning may be the answer.

What is zoned temperature anyway?

Even if your thermostat says one temperature, that doesn’t mean all the rooms in your house are going to be at that level. Heat will always rise, hence your upstairs will typically be warmer than the downstairs. Likewise, your basement will always be prone to being drafty due to the cool air staying in lower areas. With zoned temperature, you can control different areas of your home, allowing for total comfort and additional energy savings! By placing thermostats in several different zones, or areas of your home, you can ensure that the right temperature is being implemented within these specific zones.

You need to look into zoning your house if any of the following are true:

  • Every room is a different temperature
  • Room temperature changes depending on the time of day
  • You have multiple levels on your house
  • Rooms are built over a concrete slab
  • You have a finished attic or basement
  • Rooms have several windows
  • There are high or vaulted ceilings

How does zone temperature control work?

When you implement zoning in your house, the floors or rooms of your house will be divided into different segments or areas, with each of those areas getting their own thermostats. This can sound excessive, but can actually be much more cost effective. When you zone your house, you only send hot air or cold air to the rooms that need it, instead of using one blanket temperature for the entire house. Zoning your house can cut out a drastic amount of unnecessary AC usage, making your home more comfortable and lowering monthly energy costs.
