Essential Oils & Your AC

Have you ever come home and noticed the air in your home smells stale? Perhaps you are the type of homeowner who prefers their home to smell of fresh citrus. If you haven’t heard of essential oils, they are the latest in homeopathic healing and all-natural scents. Many people use essential oils in diffusers, for cooking, and massage therapy. One unique way to use your favorite essential oil is as an air freshener in your air conditioning system’s air filter. Many residential AC units are able to use essential oils.

  1. Start with a new filter – Purchase a new filter from your local hardware store, we don’t recommend adding the oil to your used, dirty filter. When choosing a filter make sure you choose one that is the right size. If you are unsure, take a look at your existing filter, the size should be printed on the side of the screen.
  2. Pick your scent mix – The next step is to pick your scent. Citrus scents are an easy crowd-pleaser, but you can also use vanilla, cinnamon, lavender or any other combination of smells you prefer. If you are combining two scents together, place a drop of each scent on a paper towel; let the scents mix for a few minutes and then return to check on the mixture. If this mixture smells good to you, you are ready to move on to spreading the scent onto your air filter.
  3. Place your scent on your filter – Once you have selected your scent, drip 15 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oils onto your air filter. Make sure you distribute the drops evenly around the filter. Put no more than 20 drops of essential oil on your filter.
  4. Install your filter – Now simply install your air filters as you would normally do and start your HVAC system.

After turning on your AC system, the scent will spread quickly throughout your home and last about 30 days. 30 days is the perfect amount for the air filter to last because most air filters need to be changed every 30 days. Don’t forget to schedule regular Sarasota HVAC maintenance for your home. Most air ducts should be cleaned yearly to prevent dust particles from building up in your ductwork and blowing into your home.
