Can Air Conditioning Affect Your Child’s Learning Ability?

Parents want the best for their children. We do what we can to provide them with a healthy lifestyle, teach them important values, and ensure they receive a proper education. But could the temperature of your home or their school be hindering their potential?

Hot vs. Cold

During the warmer and cooler months, your child’s ability to learn and focus are probably being impacted. Studies show that when exposed to heat or cold, the body struggles to learn actively, and instead focuses elsewhere.

Temperature impacts the body by the following:

  • Heat – When in hot temperatures, the body uses energy to cool off. Instead of using energy to learn, the body exerts that energy into cooling down. Cooling the body demands brain function physically, which impacts decision-making during the learning process.
  • Cold – When in cold temperatures, the brain is unable to focus on learning consistently. Instead, it experiences interruptions, or interrupted learning, since the brain will continue to break focus from the learning process and try to remind the body that it is cold and should warm itself.

Studies have shown that academic performance tends to decline in hot environments. Warm temperatures decrease alertness, interest, and focus. They also increase fatigue, headaches, and other heat exhaustion-related symptoms.

Studies also showed that in hot, humid environments, children often feel sleepy and concentration test scores are far lower.
