Signs You Need A New AC

In the Florida heat, even a few hours without air conditioning can be excruciating. If your AC system has been acting up, you’ll want to call an air conditioning repair specialist right away. In many cases, our experts can quickly diagnose and fix the problem, so your home is home cool and comfortable once again.

However, AC units don’t last forever and there may come a time when repairs are no longer an option. Understanding the signs that your AC system needs to be replaced can help you plan ahead, so you’re not blindsided by this large expense. Here are a few things you’ll want to watch out for.

1. Strange Noises

It’s normal for an AC system to make some noise when it turns on and off. However, if you hear scraping, grinding, squealing, or other unusual noises, this could be a sign of a serious problem. In many cases, these noises indicate an issue with your system’s condenser coil, blower, or compressor.

2. Unpleasant Smells

When your AC system is functioning as it should, it will blow out clean air with no strange smells. A smokey smell could indicate a problem with your AC system’s wiring. This can lead to expensive repairs and could create a dangerous situation. In this case, it’s often best to replace the unit as soon as possible.

3. Higher Energy Bills

If your electric bill has suddenly skyrocketed, you might have an AC problem. Units that are reaching the end of their lifespan often have to work harder to keep your home cool. This leads to an increase in energy usage and higher electric bills.

4. Frequent Expensive Repairs

Does it feel like you’re constantly dealing with one AC issue after another? If you find yourself repeatedly scheduling repairs or you’ve been told that your older unit has a major problem, you may be better off simply replacing it. While a new AC system isn’t cheap, in this case, a replacement may be more cost-effective when compared to what you’ll spend on repeated repairs.

5. Old Age

In the Florida heat, you can generally expect a properly maintained AC unit to last about 10 to 15 years. If your system is more than 10 years old, you’ll likely want to start planning for a replacement. This is particularly true if you’re also experiencing any of the issues listed above.

The good news is that newer AC systems are far more cost-efficient. According to Energy.gov, replacing your old unit with a new one that is more cost-efficient could save you as much as 20% to 40% on your cooling energy costs. This savings will help offset the expense of buying a new AC system.
